The second Film Criticism Conference began yesterday in Riyadh and will continue until November 10.
The Saudi Film Commission hosts a major international conference, attracting filmmakers, critics, and cinephiles worldwide. The Film Criticism Conference, themed “Sound in Cinema,” explores the impact of sound on the cinematic experience and the film industry. Topics include film scores, sound effects, natural sounds, and broader aspects of cinema and film criticism.

The event will feature a range of specialists and critics who will offer their perspectives and insights through panel discussions and presentations. Attendees can also look forward to workshops, film screenings, and interactive exhibits, all designed to enrich the experience for cinephiles and art enthusiasts alike, elevating the film-viewing journey for everyone.
The opening ceremony began with a video introducing the conference, outlining its goals, and highlighting previous successes. Moreover, this was followed by a speech from Abdullah Al-Qahtani, CEO of the Saudi Film Commission, who explained the theme for this year’s event.

“The Saudi Film Commission is committed to building, advancing, and sustaining a dynamic film industry in alignment with Saudi Vision 2030,” Al-Qahtani stated. “The commission is also focused on empowering criticism as a valuable intellectual and artistic tool that guides the future of cinema and creates new opportunities for its growth.”

Prominent Saudi director Abdullah Al-Mohaisen said: “Film criticism relies on sentient, honest, and purposeful criticism. Additionally, it is the dynamic driver of development and creativity for the director. Cinema is and will always be a message before being anything else.”
Al-Mohaisen’s speech was followed by a screening of the film “Assassination of a City,” a pioneering Saudi documentary that won several international awards.

Finally, the Film Criticism Conference is held by the Saudi Film Commission, which aims to vitalize and enrich the field of cinema in the Kingdom through unique events and talent development. The commission puts special emphasis on film criticism, considered a key factor in advancing the film industry and improving the film-watching experience.
