Russian Strikes Destroy Kyiv’s Main Power Plant

Russia destroyed Ukraine’s largest power plant in Kyiv region with a missile attack. President Zelensky criticized the West for ignoring Ukraine’s need for better air defenses, according to CNN.

Ukraine’s Air Force downed 18 missiles and 39 drones out of 82 fired by Russia, including six hypersonic Kinzhal missiles. Fortunately, there were no casualties, and power supply in Kyiv and other regions served by Trypilska TPP remained unaffected.

The Trypilska Thermal Power Plant (TPP), the main electricity supplier to Kyiv, Cherkasy, and Zhytomyr regions, was obliterated, as confirmed by Centrenergo. The company has lost all power generation capability across its three plants, all either destroyed or occupied by Russia.

“A black day in the history of Centrenergo,” it said in a statement. “The scale of the destruction is terrible. Money can’t estimate it. This is the biggest challenge for us in the history of the company.”

Moreover, social media videos displayed huge smoke plumes from the Trypilska plant as a fire persisted.

The assault on Trypilska follows a prior attack by Russia on the Zmiivska TPP in Kharkiv region on March 22, as stated by Centrenergo. Vuhlehirska TPP in Donetsk was also occupied by Russian troops in July 2022. The combined capacity of the three plants was 7690 MW according to the company’s website.

Finally, DTEK, Ukraine’s largest power company, reported Thursday’s missile and drone strikes on two of its power stations, resulting in significant damage. With 20% of Ukraine’s energy production, DTEK stated these were the worst attacks it had faced in the three weeks since Russia’s invasion began in 2022. About 80% of its power-generating facilities have been destroyed by Russian strikes.
