Riyadh Reaffirms Commitment to Sudan’s Unity, Urges Ceasefire at UN Security Council

Saudi Arabia has firmly reaffirmed its unwavering support to Sudan’s stability, territorial integrity and state institutions, emphasizing that a Sudanese-led political solution remains the only viable path to resolving the ongoing crisis.

The Kingdom’s stance was articulated by Dr. Abdulaziz Alwasil, Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, during a UN Security Council session on Sudan held on Saturday, as reported by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

He outlined Riyadh’s position clearly, stressing that resolving the crisis must ultimately come from within Sudan itself.

Dr. Alwasil warned that the continued fighting, the deteriorating security situation, and the failure to honour commitments under the Jeddah Platform and relevant UN Security Council resolutions have all contributed to worsening the humanitarian crisis.

Moreover, he also stressed Saudi Arabia’s commitment to ending the conflict, bringing the Sudanese parties closer together, and resuming political dialogue based on the Jeddah Declaration.

Condemnation of El-Fasher Crimes

Furthermore, Dr. Alwasil condemned the targeting of humanitarian aid convoys and the crimes committed in the city of El-Fasher. He expressed the Kingdom’s deep concern over the human and humanitarian losses stemming from the prolonged conflict.

Additionally, the ambassador rejected any measures that undermine Sudan’s unity or its institutions, welcoming regional and international efforts aimed at reaching a permanent ceasefire and affirmed Saudi Arabia’s continued humanitarian assistance to the Sudanese people.

Saudi Arabia has played a central mediating role in the Sudan crisis, co-sponsoring the Jeddah Platform alongside the United States as a framework for talks between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces.

However, the conflict has persisted since April 2023, triggering one of the world’s worst humanitarian emergencies, with millions displaced and widespread reports of atrocities across Darfur and beyond.
