Saudi Arabia has welcomed the preliminary deal announced between the US and Iran to halt military operations and start a 60-day negotiation period to reach a permanent agreement.

The Saudi Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Monday hailing the mediation efforts of Pakistan and Qatar. It also commended the responsiveness of both the US and Iran to these efforts which culminated in the agreement.

Furthermore, the statement reiterated the importance of restoring security and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz to the conditions that existed prior to February 28.

Saudi Arabia also expressed its aspiration to achieve a peace that enhances regional and global security through a permanent agreement that takes into account the security interests of regional states and adheres to the principle of respect for the internal affairs of states.

The US and Iran announced a preliminary deal that ends their nearly four-month war. Pakistan said that an official signing ceremony will take place on June 19 in Geneva.

Although the full details of the deal have not been disclosed yet, US President Donald Trump said it will reopen the Strait of Hormuz to shipping and lift the naval blockade on Iranian ports.

High-stakes negotiations on the remaining sticking points, including Iran’s nuclear program, are set to take place during the 60-day period.
