Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused the US of pursuing a “reckless military adventure” during a sharp escalation of tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. Writing on X, Araghchi asserted that Iranians would “never bow to pressure” after fresh maritime clashes.
The Strait of Hormuz remains the focal point of the conflict, with the waterway carrying 20% of the world’s oil and gas, and recent blockages have caused global energy prices to soar. Consequently, the US maintains a naval blockade of Iranian ports to pressure Tehran into a new deal.
On Friday, US Central Command (Centcom) disabled two Iranian tankers attempting to bypass this blockade. US forces fired “precision munitions into their smokestacks, preventing the non-compliant ships from entering Iran,” according to an official statement. Centcom currently prevents over 70 vessels from accessing Iranian ports.
Meanwhile, local officials in Iran’s Hormozgan province reported casualties. Mohammad Radmehr confirmed that a cargo vessel caught fire near Minab following US strikes. “Ten injured sailors have been transferred to hospital, and local groups and search teams are trying to learn the fate of the other sailors,” Radmehr told the Mehr news agency.
Diplomatic Efforts Amidst Threats
Despite the violence, US President Donald Trump claimed the current ceasefire remains intact. He intends for the pause to facilitate talks ending the war launched in February. However, his rhetoric remains combative. “We’ll knock them out a lot harder, and a lot more violently, in the future, if they don’t get their Deal signed, FAST!” Trump posted on Truth Social.
Simultaneously, regional mediators are working to de-escalate the situation. US Vice-President JD Vance met Qatar’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, in Washington to discuss Pakistan’s mediation efforts. The Qatari leader urged all parties to address the “root causes of the crisis” to achieve “lasting peace.”
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expects Iran to respond to formal proposals by Friday. “I hope it’s a serious offer, I really do,” Rubio stated during a visit to Italy. Furthermore, the US signaled its readiness to host separate talks next week aimed at halting clashes between Israeli forces and Iranian-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon.
