Explosion Hits US Embassy in Oslo Amid Heightened Security at American Missions

Norwegian police said on Sunday that an explosion had taken place at the US Embassy in Oslo, but confirmed that no casualties were reported, according to Arab News.

The Oslo Police Department said that the explosion occurred at around 1:00 a.m. local time (0000 GMT).

The cause of the explosion remained unknown, the authorities reported.

“At around 1:00 am we received several reports of an explosion. We arrived shortly afterward and confirmed that there had been an explosion that hit the US embassy,” police incident commander Michael Dellemyr told the public broadcaster NRK.

He also clarified that the explosion struck the entrance to the embassy’s consular section causing “minor damage”.

“We are not going to comment on anything related to the type of damage, what it is that has exploded and similar details, beyond the fact that there has been an explosion” because “it is very early in the investigation,” he added.

Currently, the investigators are closely contacting the embassy to reveal the details of the incident with a great police deployment on site.

Since the beginning of the joint US-Israel attacks on Iran on February 28, US embassies across the Middle East have been placed on heightened alert. Moreover, Iran has targeted several diplomatic missions as part of its retaliatory strikes that targeted industrial and diplomatic sites.

However, Norwegian police said there was no immediate indication that the explosion near the US embassy in Oslo was linked to the current Mideast conflict.
