Bani Unaif Mosque in Madinah Highlights Ongoing Heritage Preservation Efforts
Bani Unaif Mosque stands as a testament to ongoing efforts to preserve significant religious and historical landmarks in the region. Regarded as one of the historic mosques linked to events from the Prophet’s biography, it was built on the spot where Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) once prayed, near Quba Mosque. Today, the mosque draws visitors who come to reflect on its spiritual legacy and admire its distinctive architectural character.
The origins of this landmark trace back to the Prophet’s visit to Bani Unaif, where he met the companion Talha ibn Al-Baraa during his illness. The Prophet (peace be upon him) prayed at that location, and a mosque was later established on the same site. At first, there was no permanent structure, but it was eventually constructed using black basalt stones from the volcanic harrah along with mudbrick. Only limited elements of the original structure remain today.

In recent years, the mosque has undergone restoration and rehabilitation under the Historic Mosques Care Program during the reign of Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques. The project focused on preserving the mosque’s historical identity. Its roof was intentionally left open to maintain its authentic character, while spaced wooden columns were installed to strengthen the walls and promote natural ventilation. Traditional lanterns were also added to complement the heritage atmosphere.
The interior features white marble flooring, while the outer courtyard is adorned with shrubs and palm trees. Dark basalt rocks outline the mosque’s historic boundary wall, creating a setting that harmoniously blends simplicity with traditional beauty.
Located southwest of Quba Mosque, Bani Unaif Mosque is best visited during daylight hours, when its architectural details and design elements can be fully appreciated.
