Year-end Review: Saudi National Team’s Eventful Year and New Leadership

As we look back on 2024, the Saudi national football team experienced significant changes and developments. These changes set the stage for future accomplishments.

Managerial Shake-Up and Renard Return

Saudi Arabia’s football scene experienced major changes in 2024, starting with Roberto Mancini’s exit as head coach. Disappointing results in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, including a loss to Japan and a draw with Bahrain, led to this decision. The Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) turned to a familiar face, reappointing French tactician Herve Renard. Renard previously led Saudi Arabia to the 2022 World Cup, including a historic win over Argentina.

Renard signed a contract running until 2025, with an option to extend through the 2027 Asian Cup. His immediate focus was revitalizing Saudi Arabia’s World Cup campaign, aiming to reverse early setbacks.

Promising Start for Renard in World Cup Qualifiers

Renard’s return brought hope as the Green Falcons faced challenging opponents in Group B of the qualifiers. They currently sit fourth in the group, trailing Japan, Australia, and Indonesia. A surprising 2-0 defeat to Indonesia last month added pressure on the team. The remaining four fixtures against China, Japan, Bahrain and Australia will be crucial for Saudi Arabia’s chances.

Renard’s leadership will be vital in these high-stakes matches, with the team aiming to close the gap on their rivals.

Focus Shifts to Arabian Gulf Cup

Beyond the World Cup qualifiers, Saudi Arabia is preparing for the 26th Arabian Gulf Cup in Kuwait. The tournament kicks off on 21st December 2024 and runs through 3rd January 2025. It presents an opportunity for Renard to test new strategies and integrate young talent into the squad.

The Green Falcons aim to build on their strong legacy, having reached the final in the previous edition. This regional competition will serve as a critical stepping stone toward broader international success.

Looking Ahead

Saudi Arabia’s 2024 journey was filled with challenges and moments of promise. Under Renard’s guidance, the team aims to reignite their campaign. The next few months will be pivotal as they navigate intense qualifiers and prepare for regional competition.
