Building on this momentum, the Embassy of Japan in Saudi Arabia hosted “Al-Majlis Al-Yabani” (Japanese Speakers’ Gathering) at the ambassador’s residence in Riyadh.
A Growing Community of Japanese Speakers
The event brought together a wide spectrum of participants, including Japanese language learners, students and teachers from King Saud University’s Japanese Language Program, graduates of Japanese universities, professionals, Japanese residents and individuals eager to deepen their understanding of Japan.
To support the growing collaboration between Saudi Arabia and Japan, the gathering offered participants a unique opportunity to reinforce connections while celebrating their shared interest in Japan.
The initiative shines a spotlight on the Embassy’s broader commitment to strengthening cultural diplomacy through language education.
By promoting the study and practical use of Japanese in Saudi Arabia, the event not only fostered networks among Japanese speakers but also created opportunities for participants to exchange experiences, broaden cultural perspectives and foster the enduring friendship between Japan and the Kingdom.
What Makes Language a Cornerstone of Bilateral Friendship?
Welcoming participants, Yasunari Morino lauded the growing appreciation for Japanese language and culture in Saudi Arabia, underscoring the pivotal role of linguistic exchange in bringing communities closer together. He also expressed optimism that the Japanese-speaking community will continue to expand its presence and emerge as one of the central pillars of bilateral friendship.
Building on the ambassador’s message, the winners of the 16th Riyadh Japanese Speech Contest, held in November 2025, captivated the audience with eloquent speeches delivered entirely in Japanese.
Standing out as more than a showcase of exceptional language proficiency, the contestants’ presentations revealed a profound understanding of Japanese society, culture, and values, underscoring how language education can serve as a powerful bridge, fostering genuine cross‑cultural appreciation and deepening mutual understanding.

Looking ahead, the Embassy of Japan has emphasized its dedication to promoting Japanese language education while fostering cultural engagement across Saudi Arabia.
