US Invites Sudanese Warring Parties to Talks Co-hosted by Saudi Arabia

The US has invited the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to participate in ceasefire talks in Switzerland, reported the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

The talks will be co-hosted by Saudi Arabia and Switzerland. It will also involve the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, the African Union and the United Nations as observers.

In the light of this, the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, thanked the government of Switzerland for hosting these talks, and welcomed Saudi Arabia as a co-host.

Sudanese Ceasefire Talks

In a statement, Blinken said that the talks build on the earlier Jeddah processes co-facilitated with Saudi Arabia, and aim to “reach a nationwide cessation of violence, enabling humanitarian access to all those in need, and develop a robust monitoring and verification mechanism to ensure implementation of any agreement.”

The US Secretary of State invited the Sudanese warring parties to participate in ceasefire talks mediated by the US that will begin on August 14, 2024, in Switzerland.

“The scale of death, suffering, and destruction in Sudan is devastating. This senseless conflict must end,” Blinken said. He added that the US “calls upon the SAF and the RSF to attend the talks and approach them constructively, with the imperative to save lives, stop the fighting, and create a path to a negotiated political solution to the conflict.”

Blinken stressed that Sudan’s governance “must return to civilians,” in response to Sudanese people demand.

Supporting Peace Efforts

Earlier in July, the Saudi Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Eng. Waleed bin Abdulkarim Al-Khuraiji, met with the Chairman of the Sovereign Council of Sudan, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, in Port Sudan.

During their meeting, Al-Khuraiji underscored Saudi Arabia’s support for the return of peace and stability to Sudan. He noted that this requires de-escalation and self-restraint, in addition to a keenness to resume negotiations, and being responsive to positive and humanitarian initiatives.

Moreover, Al-Khuraiji reaffirmed to Al-Burhan the Kingdom’s support for all efforts that would advance the outcomes of the Jeddah Declaration. He also stressed Saudi Arabia’s support for all UN and international efforts that aim to achieve a permanent ceasefire in Sudan, as well as the humanitarian efforts that aim to alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people.

The war in Sudan erupted in April 2023. The ongoing violence has displaced millions of Sudanese people and caused a dire humanitarian crisis.
