Unemployment rate in Saudi Arabia drops to its lowest level in 5 years

Estimates of the General Authority for Statistics in Saudi Arabia, based on the labour force survey for the first quarter of 2021, showed a decrease in the unemployment rate to

11.7% in the first quarter of 2021, compared to 12.6% in the fourth quarter of 2020.

It is the lowest level since 2016 when it was at 11.6% in the second quarter of the same year.

The labour market statistics report stated that the unemployment rate for Saudis was 0.1 points lower than it was in the first quarter of last year. That is, it is lower than its level before the Corona pandemic.

The unemployment rate for the total working-age population (Saudis and non-Saudis 15 years and over) decreased to 6.5%, compared to 7.4% during the fourth quarter of 2020.

The authority’s data showed a decrease in the unemployment rate of the total male population of working age in Saudi Arabia in the first quarter of 2021 to 3.7%, compared to 4% in the fourth quarter of the previous year 2020.

In the first quarter of 2021, the total working female population’s unemployment rate fell from 20.2% in the fourth quarter of 2020 to 16.1%.

The unemployment rate for Saudi males reached 7.2% in the first quarter of 2021, compared to 7.1% in the fourth quarter of last year.

According to labour force survey estimates, the jobless rate for Saudi women reached 21.2% in the first quarter of 2021, down from 24.4% in the previous quarter.
