UN Summit to Revive Two-State Solution for Mideast Peace Set for June

An international conference aimed at revitalizing the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict will convene from 17 to 20 June at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York. This event follows a December resolution approved by the UN General Assembly, reflecting global efforts for peace. The conference will be co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia, signaling strong regional and international support. The confirmation of the dates was announced by UN spokeswoman Sharon Birch. The upcoming meeting aims to foster greater recognition of a Palestinian state worldwide.

Growing International Support for Palestine

A diplomat close to the preparations in Paris expressed optimism, suggesting the conference could lead to more countries officially recognizing Palestine. Currently, nearly 150 nations recognize the State of Palestine, which holds observer status at the United Nations. However, it has not achieved full UN membership, as the Security Council has yet to approve its admission. Notably, countries like Ireland, Norway, and Spain recognized Palestine in May 2024, setting a precedent for others to follow.

Furthermore, several European governments, including France, have not officially recognized Palestine yet. French President Emmanuel Macron indicated potential recognition in June, emphasizing the importance of international support. Macron also expressed hope that the New York conference would encourage recognition for both Palestine and Israel by countries that have not yet established diplomatic relations.

Arab Nations and the Path toward Peace

Regional dynamics continue to shape the peace process. Countries like the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Morocco normalized relations with Israel through the Abraham Accords in 2020. However, many Arab nations, particularly Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Lebanon, have not joined this normalization effort. Saudi Arabia, before the Gaza war in October 2023, rejected normalization without a Palestinian state, maintaining its longstanding stance. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu opposes any recognition that does not include a secure Palestinian homeland, with some officials calling for annexation of the West Bank.

This upcoming UN conference marks a crucial step toward peace and stability in the Middle East, emphasizing the importance of dialog and mutual understanding among nations. The international community must come together to support a two-state solution, ensuring a brighter future for both Israelis and Palestinians.
