Turkey Inks Deal with Britain to Purchase 20 Eurofighter Jets

Turkey has signed a deal with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to buy 20 Eurofighter Typhoon jets for 8 billion pounds ($10.7billion), according to BBC.

The deal was signed during Starmer’s visit to Ankara on Monday aimed at discussing the pending sale of 40 Eurofighter Typhoon jet with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

The agreement signals the increasing defense cooperation between NATO allies, as Ankara seeks to boost its air capabilities and narrow the gap with regional powers such as Israel.

Erdogan has commended the deal with the UK, labeling it as a new symbol of defense cooperation with London.

Turkey previously introduced proposals to its European partners and the United States highlighting swift pathways to procure advanced fighter aircraft. These suggestions are part of ongoing talks to purchase 40 Eurofighter Typhoons, in addition to US-made F-16s and F-35s, according to Reuters.

In 2024, Ankara inked a $7-billion deal with the US to purchase 40 F-16s that have faced delays.

In July, both Turkey and the UK signed a preliminary deal for the purchase, which obtained approval from the Eurofighter consortium members Britain, Germany, Italy, and Spain — represented by Airbus, BAE Systems, and Leonardo.
