A Syrian military delegation visited the National Defense University in Istanbul on Thursday, amid a strong defense cooperation between Damascus and Ankara following the overthrow of Bashar Al-Assad’s regime, according to Arab News.
Important Talks
Headed by Maj. Gen. Salim Idris of Syria’s Ministry of Defense, the delegation held significant talks with National Defense University President Erhan Afyoncu and senior Turkish military officials.
The meeting delved into ways of broadening cooperation in military training, professional development, as well as defense education.

In May, Syrian troops participated in joint military drills with NATO forces in Türkiye, marking their first participation in such exercises since the fall of Al-Assad’s government.
The current Syrian government, led by President Ahmed Al-Sharaa, has moved to strengthen security and diplomatic relations with Türkiye and European countries after years of isolation under the previous regime that tore Syria apart.
Appointing Ambassador
In October, Ankara appointed a new ambassador to Syria, the first since Ankara cut its diplomatic ties with Damascus over a decade ago. Türkiye’s previous representation in Syria had been limited to a charge d’affaires.

That is why the appointment serves as a symbol of Türkiye’s support for the new Syrian government and its growing engagement in shaping Syria’s political future after the fall of Al-Assad.
Syrian Turkish Relations
Since the New Syrian government of President Ahmed Al-Sharaa seized the power, Türkiye’s has been fostering ties and cooperation with Syria, both economically and militarily.
In August, the Syrian Defense Minister signed a memorandum of understanding with his Turkish Counterpart on military training and consultancy after talks in Ankara, according to Reuters.
