The Saudi Ministry of Health (MoH) strongly emphasized the importance of receiving the meningococcal vaccine before performing Umrah during the holy month of Ramadan. This advisory forms a central part of preventative health measures designed to protect the millions of pilgrims visiting the Kingdom.
Health officials noted that overcrowding at the Grand Mosque during the fasting month significantly increases the risk of infection transmission. Meningococcal disease spreads through respiratory droplets and can lead to serious health complications if individuals leave the condition untreated. Consequently, the ministry stresses that getting vaccinated remains an essential step to protect every pilgrim’s health and personal safety.
Timing and Immunity Guidelines
The Ministry of Health clarified that pilgrims should receive the vaccine at least 10 days before performing their Umrah rituals. This specific timeframe ensures that the body develops sufficient immunity to provide the best level of protection during the pilgrimage. Furthermore, the vaccine provides immunity for up to five years, which helps reduce the overall transmission of infection among crowds.
Authorities urge those wishing to perform Umrah to book an appointment in advance through the user-friendly Sehhaty digital application. Pilgrims can visit designated vaccination clinics to receive their doses easily and conveniently without facing long delays or complications. If a pilgrim received the vaccine within the past five years, they do not need to repeat the dose now.
Adhering to these health guidelines reflects a pilgrim’s awareness and genuine concern for the safety of the entire Muslim community. By following these recommendations, worshippers contribute to performing their sacred rituals in a safe, healthy, and spiritually fulfilling environment.
