SDAIA Organizes Open Data Datathon in Riyadh

The Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) wrapped up its innovative event, the Open Data Datathon, in Riyadh recently. Spanning three days, the initiative aimed to nurture young talents in data science and boosting innovation by encouraging participants to address real-world challenges through open data.

Event Overview:

The Datathon witnessed a distinctive attendance from experts and specialists in the field, with over 200 competitors representing nine countries: Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Yemen, Egypt, Palestine, Bangladesh, Syria, Algeria, and Nigeria. This international participation was supervised by local and global experts through workshops and mentoring hours, aiding participants in developing solutions using open data.

A Platform for Youth Empowerment:

The event, held at the SDAIA premises in Riyadh, was designed to propel the youth into the realms of data science, innovation, and real-world problem-solving. Participants were challenged to devise data-driven solutions to practical issues, thereby sharpening their skills and fostering a culture of innovation.

Leadership’s Involvement:

Dr. Abdullah bin Sharaf Al-Ghamdi, the President of SDAIA, paid a visit to the event site to review the innovative projects presented by participants. Expressing pride in the displayed high-caliber skills in knowledge acquisition, learning, and development through such gatherings, Dr. Al-Ghamdi recognized the potential of this generation in contributing significantly to the data and AI domain.

Aligning with Vision 2030:

Dr. Al-Ghamdi elucidated that 70% of the Saudi Vision 2030 targets are directly related to data and artificial intelligence and the remainder having an indirect relation. Through events like the Open Data Datathon, SDAIA aims to cultivate the right environment for creativity, underlining the Kingdom’s need for such projects that could build a strong foundation for achieving the vision’s objectives.

Winning Innovations:

The first place was bagged by the team Traffix AI, rewarded with a training program grant worth SAR 250,000 at Draper University. It was followed by  Team 2030, securing second place with a SAR 150,000 grant for a training program at London Business School, and Team Datax, clinching third place with a cash prize of SAR 30,000.

Implications for Future:

The launch of the Open Data Datathon signifies SDAIA’s efforts in raising awareness in data and AI fields to build human capacity. It aims to enhance the contributions of the nation’s youth in elevating Saudi Arabia to the ranks of leading countries within data and AI-based economies, and foster interactions with their international counterparts for mutual benefit through experience exchange.

The Open Data Datathon, organized by SDAIA, not only provided a platform for young minds to explore and innovate but also brought together a diverse group of individuals from across the globe.

This initiative is a small yet significant step towards achieving a data-driven economy, aligning with Saudi Arabia’s broader vision of becoming a leader in the data and artificial intelligence arena.
