The Saudi Super Cup, organized annually by the Saudi Arabian Football Federation, is currently named “The Diriyah Super Cup” due to sponsorship.
Tournament Origins and Evolution
Initially a two-team competition, the Super Cup started in 2013. It featured the Saudi Pro League champions and the King Cup winners. Since the 2022/2023 season, four clubs have contested the tournament.
The concept began with the 1978/1979 Saudi Premier League champions Al Hilal and the 1979 King Cup winners Al Ahli. They played a two-leg match in 1979. The first leg in Jeddah ended in a 2-2 draw. Al Hilal won the second leg in Riyadh 4-1.
Twenty years later, Al Hilal and Al Ahli faced each other again in the 1997/98 Super Cup. Al Hilal won 5-2. This match marked the first game of the Saudi Founder’s Cup.
The Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) officially launched the competition in 2012. The 2011/12 Saudi Professional League champions Al Shabab and the 2012 King Cup winners Al Ahli were set to compete. However, scheduling conflicts led to the cancellation of the 2012 Super Cup.
The tournament officially started in 2013 with Al Fateh, the 2012/13 Saudi Pro League winners, and Al Ittihad, the 2013 King Cup winners. Al Fateh won the inaugural match 3-2 in overtime.
In the most recent version, Al Hilal claimed the 2024 title with a 4-1 victory over Al Nassr in the final.
