Saudi Films Make Landmark Debut in Chinese Cinemas in October

Saudi films will be screened for the first time in China, the world’s largest cinema market. The Saudi Film Commission will host Saudi Film Nights from October 21 to 26, 2024, showcasing Saudi features and shorts in Beijing, Shanghai, and Suzhou.

A Landmark Event for Saudi Cinema

This initiative follows similar successful events in Morocco and Australia. The screenings will precede the films’ general release in Chinese theaters. The event will include discussions with filmmakers, aiming to engage audiences and industry professionals.

The Saudi Film Commission aims to develop the Saudi film industry, highlighting local talent and promoting cultural exchange. Experts expect that the event will attract prominent figures, journalists, film critics, and cinema enthusiasts from China.

Expanding Global Partnerships

In March, the Saudi Film Commission signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bona Film Group, one of China’s leading film companies. Prince Bader bin Abdullah bin Farhan Al-Saud, the Kingdom’s Minister of Culture and Chairman of the Film Commission, signed the partnership during an official visit.

This collaboration focuses on film distribution, talent development, and investment in the film industry. It also explores establishing a joint film fund and enhancing Saudi filmmakers’ skills through Chinese film education institutions.

A History of Cultural Collaboration

Saudi Arabia and China share a rich history of cultural exchange. Highlights include China’s participation as a guest of honor at the Janadriyah Cultural Festival in 2013 and the “Roads of Arabia” exhibit at Beijing National Museum.

These initiatives align with Saudi Vision 2030, emphasizing cultural diplomacy and international partnerships.
