Saudi Arabia’s RCU, Italy Forge Stronger Cultural Heritage Ties

Saudi Arabia’s Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) has signed agreements with Italy’s Directorate-General of Museums and Pompeii Archaeological Park. These partnerships aim to strengthen cooperation in heritage preservation, archaeology, and museums, benefiting both nations.

Historically, the ancient Incense Route connected these civilizations, fostering cultural exchange. Building upon this legacy, the new agreements encompass diverse fields, including archaeology, gastronomy, and architecture, enriching bilateral relations.

Strategic Cultural Partnership Established

In 2023, Saudi Minister of Culture Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan and Italian counterpart Gennaro Sangiuliano signed a strategic partnership agreement. This accord aims to enhance cultural exchange between the two nations, promoting mutual understanding and collaboration.

Recently, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni visited AlUla, exploring cultural and historical landmarks, including Hegra, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This visit underscores the deepening cultural ties and shared commitment to heritage conservation.

Shared Vision for Heritage Development

RCU CEO Abeer Al Akel emphasized the profound historical depth shared by AlUla and Pompeii. She stated that both aspire to develop through international cooperation in heritage conservation, management, and global cultural promotion, aligning with efforts to enhance sustainable tourism.

Al Akel highlighted that this partnership expands cooperation across multiple fields through expertise exchange. Both sides share a commitment to protecting cultural treasures for future generations, working together to design and develop new cultural assets and experiences.
