Saudi Arabia’s Nuclear Program Aimed at Generating Energy: Climate Envoy
Saudi Arabia’s nuclear program purpose is to generate nuclear energy, the Saudi Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Climate Envoy, Adel Al-Jubeir, stated on Thursday.
During his participation in a dialogue session hosted by the Saudi House at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Al-Jubeir emphasized that Saudi Arabia is pursuing a nuclear program for energy purposes only.
Pursuing Nuclear Energy
The Saudi Minister added that the Kingdom is harnessing its vast uranium reserves, estimated at 1% to 4% of global reserves, according to Saudi Gazette.
Noting that Saudi Arabia is one of the world’s largest energy producers, Al-Jubeir said: “We want to convert uranium into fuel that is sold at a higher price, and this includes all the stages of converting uranium from raw material to energy.”
Moreover, Al-Jubeir pointed to the Kingdom’s mining and uranium enriching programs. He stressed that Saudi Arabia wants to benefit from jobs, industries and profits related to uranium mining and enrichment.
Dominating Energy Exports
Furthermore, Al-Jubeir said that Saudi Arabia wants to export various energy products to the world, including oil, gas, electricity, solar energy, water energy and even nuclear energy.
“We do not want to be a country where mining companies come to extract minerals and transport them abroad for processing, refining and producing energy outside the country, so that we end up with a hole in the ground and benefit from only 10% of the value,” he noted.
Peaceful Purposes
The Saudi Minister ruled out any plans to produce nuclear weapons, emphasizing that the Kingdom’s nuclear plans are for peaceful purposes.
“We believe that we can achieve this in a way that has nothing to do with producing nuclear weapons as our main goal is to produce energy and make profits,” he said.
Ambitious Nuclear Plans
Earlier this month, the Saudi Energy Minister, Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, unveiled Saudi Arabia’s ambitious plans to enrich and sell uranium.
During his participation in iktva 2025, he said: “For those who question our mining capabilities, we will not only mine and manufacture uranium, but we will also enrich it and sell it.”
Moreover, the Saudi Energy Minister said that the Kingdom has two mountains rich in rare minerals. He also added that Saudi Arabia will provide essential materials for industries to achieve energy security, underscoring the Kingdom’s commitment to securing its oil supplies.
