Saudi Arabia, United States Sign Nuclear Energy Cooperation Agreement

Saudi Arabia and the United States have signed an agreement on cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, underscoring the strategic partnership between the two countries and following up on what was announced during Crown Prince and Prime Minister Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s visit to the United States in November last year regarding the completion of negotiations on bilateral cooperation in this field, as well as the strengthening of cooperation in energy and advanced technologies.

The agreement, signed by Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, Minister of Energy and Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources, and U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright, aims to deepen bilateral cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and support the exchange of expertise, knowledge, and technologies. It is designed to advance joint cooperation in line with the highest international standards related to nuclear safety, security, and non-proliferation, reflecting the two countries’ shared vision of expanding cooperation in energy and future technologies while supporting sustainable development.

The agreement also extends the long-standing cooperation between the two countries in the energy sector and supports efforts to diversify energy sources, develop advanced technologies, and expand opportunities for cooperation and investment in ways that serve the mutual interests of the two friendly nations.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the agreement paves the way for a long-term strategic partnership in the nuclear energy sector.

The ministry said the agreement, together with a bilateral safeguards agreement, establishes the legal framework governing nuclear cooperation between the two countries, opening the door to broader cooperation in peaceful nuclear fields over the coming decades.

It added that the nuclear partnership agreement with Saudi Arabia will be submitted to the U.S. Congress for review in accordance with the applicable legal procedures before entering into force.

The U.S. Department of Energy said the agreement will help expand U.S. nuclear technology exports, strengthen economic and technical cooperation between Washington and Riyadh, and support the participation of U.S. companies in Saudi Arabia’s peaceful nuclear energy projects.

The ministry also said the two agreements provide the legal foundation for a long-term strategic partnership, within the framework of strengthening cooperation between the two countries in the energy sector while adhering to the highest standards for the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
