Saudi Arabia Takes Lead: Elected Vice Chair of Codex Alimentarius Commission

Saudi Arabia, represented by the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA), has proudly been elected as the Vice Chairperson of the Codex Alimentarius Commission. This prestigious election will span a one-year term, following a remarkable display of support from member countries during the 47th session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC47) held in Geneva.

A Global Commitment to Food Safety and Quality

Established in 1963, Codex Alimentarius is the leading global organization dedicated to developing comprehensive food standards that ensure consumer health. This esteemed body comprises 189 member countries and functions collaboratively under the auspices of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Their work significantly influences international food trade.

A Testament to Saudi Arabia’s Growing Influence

SFDA Chief Executive Dr. Hisham Saad Aljadhey spoke about the pride surrounding this significant achievement. He emphasized that this success reflects the unwavering support and empowerment from the Kingdom’s leadership, showcasing Saudi Arabia’s ascent to global excellence. This milestone aligns perfectly with Saudi Vision 2030, which prioritizes enhancing the Kingdom’s international leadership in various sectors, including food safety.

Strengthening Global Food Standards

Dr. Aljadhey highlighted the SFDA’s ongoing commitment to bolstering its global role. The agency focuses on developing effective systems and standards while adhering to international food safety regulations. These vital efforts aim to enhance nutritional quality and promote greater trade flexibility across various sectors worldwide. They also contribute significantly to advancing public health and fostering sustainable development on a global scale.

Leader in the Region

Khaled Al-Zahrani will serve as the Vice Chairperson following his successful tenure as Regional Coordinator for Near East Countries at Codex. Since 2021, he has contributed valuable insights and expertise to this important organization, having been re-elected in 2023. His leadership will now guide the efforts of the global food standards-setting body.

Saudi Arabia’s election as Vice Chair of the Codex Alimentarius Commission marks a significant step forward in its global influence. Through dedicated efforts and international collaboration, the Kingdom aims to enhance food standards, ensuring safety and quality for consumers worldwide.
