Saudi Arabia Keep World Cup Dream Alive with Japan Draw

Saudi Arabia secured a vital 0-0 away draw against Japan on Tuesday, keeping their hopes of automatic qualification for the 2026 World Cup alive.

The stalemate leaves Saudi Arabia third in Group C, trailing second-place Australia by three points. Only the top two teams secure direct entry to the 2026 World Cup. With two matches remaining, the race intensifies for automatic spots.

Match Highlights

Despite Japan dominating the game, the Green Falcons showcased disciplined defending to stifle the already-qualified hosts. Japan’s Daizen Maeda struck the post early, while Takefusa Kubo threatened twice before halftime. Saudi Arabia’s Muhannad Al-Shanqeeti missed a rare first-half header. Despite late pressure, Japan failed to break the deadlock, with Junya Ito curling a shot over the bar.

Saudi coach Herve Renard missed several key players but praised his team’s resilience. Japan’s Hajime Moriyasu rotated six starters, including injured stars Kaoru Mitoma and Ayase Ueda. Both sides leaned on substitutes, but neither found a breakthrough.

Japan had already secured their spot last week. The Green Falcons, however, fought hard to stay in contention. They displayed a tenacious defensive performance with two games remaining.

Coach Renard’s Optimism

Renard remained hopeful after the draw. “Everything can happen,” he said. Australia’s win over China keeps them three points ahead. Saudi Arabia will host Australia in their final qualifier. Renard emphasized the importance of the remaining matches.

“We have to focus on Bahrain,” he noted. “Australia will face Japan, and we will host Australia in the last game. It’s a tough fight, but we’re still in the mix.”

The Saudis will travel to face Bahrain in June. Afterward, they will host a potentially decisive match against Australia.

The Saudis aim to improve offensively for the final two games. Their World Cup dream remains within reach.
