Saudi Arabia, Japan Launch Lighthouse Initiative for Clean Energy Cooperation

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Japan launched the KSA-Japan Lighthouse Initiative for Clean Energy Cooperation, on July 16. The initiative aims to showcase the leadership of Saudi Arabia and Japan in clean energy projects and sustainable advanced materials, as well as to ensure the resiliency of the supply chain to ensure sustainable and secure supplies.

The initiative was announced during a bilateral meeting between HRH Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of the Council of Ministers of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan.

“The KSA-Japan Lighthouse Initiative is a significant milestone in our shared journey towards a clean energy future,” said Prince Mohammed. “This initiative will help us to accelerate the development and deployment of clean energy technologies, and to build a more resilient and sustainable energy supply chain.”

Prime Minister Kishida added, “Japan is committed to working with Saudi Arabia to achieve our shared climate goals. The KSA-Japan Lighthouse Initiative is a testament to our strong cooperation in clean energy, and I am confident that it will help us to make a significant contribution to the global effort to combat climate change.”

The Lighthouse Initiative will focus on a number of key areas, including:

  • Hydrogen and ammonia
  • e-fuels
  • Circular Carbon Economy/Carbon Recycling
  • Direct Air Capture
  • Critical minerals required for the energy sector and supply chain resilience
  • Sustainable advanced materials
  • Research and knowledge exchange

The initiative will also facilitate the participation of leading companies from Saudi Arabia and Japan, and expand on their ongoing collaboration.

“The KSA-Japan Lighthouse Initiative is a win-win for both countries,” said Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al-Jasser, Minister of Energy of Saudi Arabia. “It will help us to accelerate the development of clean energy technologies, and to create new opportunities for businesses in both countries.”
