Saudi Arabia hosts the World Weightlifting Championships for adults
For the first time in its history, the World Adult Weightlifting Championship, which determines eligibility for the 2024 Paris Olympics, will be held in Riyadh. This is according to an announcement by the International Weightlifting Federation.
This tournament will be held from 2 to 17 September 2023, with the participation of more than 1,500 players representing more than 130 countries from around the world.
This tournament is the largest one organized by the International Weightlifting Federation since its establishment in 1895.
It is also considered the first tournament in the history of the game in which participation was mandatory. This was due to it being the most significant qualifying station for the Olympics in Paris.
The country’s non-participation in this tournament means that it will not be present at all at the next Olympics.
Prince Abdulaziz Al-Faisal, Chairman of the Saudi Olympic Committee, expressed his thanks and appreciation to King Salman and his Crown Prince for their support and interest in the sports sector.
His Highness affirmed that the Kingdom’s hosting of this tournament is evidence of the international sports community’s confidence in the Kingdom’s capabilities to host large competitions.
He said: “This hosting coincides with the goals of the sports sector within the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, in a way that enhances and raises the Kingdom’s chances of hosting the largest and most significant international events.”
He indicated that it is an opportunity for Saudi players to gain experience, increase sports contact, and snatch qualifying cards for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
