Saudi Arabia affirmed on Tuesday its support for Egypt’s position in the GERD dispute, which calls for reaching a binding agreement for all parties regarding the operation of the giant project, and pledged to cooperate with Cairo to overcome obstacles and increase economic cooperation.
This came in the final statement of the meeting of the Follow-up and Political Consultation Committee between Saudi Arabia and Egypt, which took place Wednesday in the presence of Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud and his Egyptian counterpart, Sameh Shoukry, in Riyadh, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
The statement added that this is to strengthen the preservation of peace and security on the African continent by entering into serious negotiations between the concerned GERD parties, as it is the best solution to reach an agreement that satisfies all parties and the importance of exerting good efforts during the negotiation process.
On the other hand, the Egyptian side expressed its solidarity with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in all the measures it takes to protect its national security, stressing its rejection of any attacks on the territory of the Kingdom and considering that the security of Saudi Arabia and the Arab Gulf region is an integral part of Egyptian national security.
In order to enhance economic cooperation between the two countries, they agreed on the need to remove obstacles that hinder the process of increasing trade and investment exchange between them, and the two sides expressed their complete satisfaction with the development of cooperation in all fields, with the importance of continuing bilateral coordination between experts to reach more aspects of cooperation and coordination between the two brotherly countries.
They discussed the repercussions of the coronavirus pandemic on the two brotherly countries, the region and the world, as well as its health, economic and social consequences, with the aim of preserving human life, protecting livelihoods and reducing the damages resulting from this pandemic.
They also stressed the importance of coordinating efforts and exchanging experiences of the two countries in implementing the distance education system, food security system, and health and medical measures in dealing with this pandemic in order to confront it and overcome its negative repercussions.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the two sides stressed the importance of continuing the coordination and political consultation mechanism between them, given that this provides a strong impetus to bilateral relations on the one hand, and coordination on regional issues and multiple work on the other, in a manner that supports common interests and unites efforts to confront the challenges before the two countries.
