Saudi Arabia Commends Recognition of Palestine by UK, Australia, Canada, Portugal
Saudi Arabia has welcomed Britain, Australia, Canada, and Portugal’s formal recognition of Palestinian State on Sunday, according to Al-Arabiya.
The Saudi Foreign Ministry said that this decisive step mirrored the four Western nations’ “serious commitment… to supporting the peace process and advancing the two-state solution.”
The Kingdom has also expressed hope that other countries will take more positive steps and announce their recognition of Palestinian State.
“The Kingdom looks forward to more countries recognizing the State of Palestine and taking further positive steps, which will contribute to fulfilling the aspirations of the Palestinian people to live in peace on their land and enable the Palestinian Authority to fulfill its duties towards a future of security, stability, and prosperity for the Palestinian people,” the ministry added.
France is also expected to follow suit this week at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Palestinian & Israeli Reactions
In response, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas noted that recognition would play a pivotal role for the “State of Palestine to live side by side with the State of Israel in security, peace, and good neighborliness.”
Meanwhile, Israel condemned the Western move and described it as a “huge reward to terrorism.”
Moreover, two Israeli far-right ministers on Sunday urged the annexation of the Israeli-occupied West Bank.
Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir said that the recognition of the Palestinian State requires immediate countermeasures such as the “swift application of sovereignty in Judea and Samaria and the complete dismantling of the Palestinian Authority.”
In the same context, Finance Minister, Bezalel Smotrich, noted that the only response to Western’s recognition of Palestinian State is “sovereignty over the historic homeland of the Jewish people in Judea and Samaria, and permanently removing the folly of a Palestinian state from the agenda.”
