Saudi Arabia Backs Lebanon’s Efforts to Keep Arms Under State Control

Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, underscored the Kingdom’s unwavering support for Lebanon and its commitment to ensuring that arms remain solely under state control, according to Al Arabiya.

Prince Faisa;’s remarks came during talks with Prime Minister Nawaf Salam on Thursday on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos.

Both officials discussed the Saudi-Lebanese ties, which have faced mounting tensions in recent years amid Hezbollah’s grip on Lebanon’s institutions and the surge of drug smuggling into the Kingdom.

During the meeting, Prince Faisal commended Lebanon’s current government for its reform initiatives and ongoing efforts to protect the nation’s capabilities, security, and territorial integrity.

In March 2025, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun arrived in Riyadh, becoming the first Lebanese President to visit Saudi Arabia in six years.

Interestingly, the President noted that he selected the Kingdom as his first destination due to its “historic links” with Lebanon and its central role as a regional and global player.

“I hope and expect that Saudi Arabia will help us reset relations in the interest of both countries and overcome recent obstacles,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Kingdom signaled its intent to strengthen commercial relations with Lebanon in November, following what it described as effective measures by Lebanese authorities to curb the flow of drug smuggling into the Kingdom.

These plans marked a significant shift from Saudi Arabia’s stance toward Lebanon in 2021 when Riyadh suspended all imports from Lebanon in 2021, attributing the move to the illicit trafficking of Captagon.
