Saudi Arabia Announces Updated Measures for Commercial Use of Public Sidewalks

In a significant milestone to foster Saudi Arabia’s urban environment, the Ministry of Municipalities and Housing has announced new updated regulations for the commercial use of public sidewalks across the Kingdom, according to Gulf News.

The new requirements feature refined standards for restaurants, cafés, and retail outlets seeking to use adjacent pavements for outdoor seating and product displays.

The measures seek to ensure the vibrancy and aesthetic appeal of urban streetscapes while protecting the movement of pedestrians and maintaining smooth traffic flow.

The ministry noted that the new framework aims to balance the advancement of local investment with the protection of public spaces, developing a cleaner, safer, and more orderly urban environment.

The updates also outline detailed standards for the arrangement of furniture, umbrellas, barriers, and decorative greenery, to maintain a significant balance between functionality and visual appeal.

Interestingly, business owners can obtain permits through the “Balady” platform, which offers users a fully digital and streamlined application process.

Authorities stated that the move mirrors the ministry’s dedication to boosting public spaces, modernizing urban environments, and solidifying the appeal of Saudi cities as vibrant destinations for residents, visitors, and investors.
