Saudi Arabia affirms its support for IAEA

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia affirmed its support for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to carry out its responsibilities in spreading nuclear science and technology among member states and to advance its role in harnessing the atom for peace.

This came in the speech of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia delivered by HRH Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman bin Abdulaziz; Minister of Energy, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority at the 66th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency, held in the Austrian capital; Vienna.

He referred to the Kingdom’s contribution to supporting the Agency’s laboratories, related to the fields of nuclear and radiological control, within the framework of its comprehensive project (Renual 2), which enhances the vital role of the Agency in supporting countries in the control areas.

His Highness affirmed that the Kingdom is looking forward to the contributions of developed countries and making their expertise and capabilities available to support the Agency in implementing its programs.

 

His Highness referred to the Kingdom’s strategy aimed at diversifying energy sources, and its national project to build a nuclear power plant to produce electricity. He explained that, at the current stage, a study is underway to issue a license for the nuclear plant site, after completing the preparation of the technical specifications documents for the plant, which were presented in an international competition. He expressed the Kingdom’s thanks to the agency for its role in reviewing the technical documents of this competition.

His Highness Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman spoke about the rapid growth of national nuclear and radiological regulatory capabilities, to keep pace with national and international nuclear regulatory requirements. He stressed the Kingdom’s commitment, following its national decisions, to adopt the Agency’s standards for nuclear safety and security as a minimum, praising the Kingdom’s benefit from various services and audit missions, provided by the Agency, in the supervisory aspects.

His Highness affirmed that the Kingdom appreciates the Agency’s efforts in organizing meetings related to a set of international instruments it supervises, and preparing for the meeting on the Nuclear Safety Agreement, noting that the Kingdom benefits from its participation in these meetings by exchanging international experiences, and reviewing the Global best practices.

 

After his speech, His Highness the Minister of Energy expressed the Kingdom’s thanks to the Agency and its Director General for their success in enhancing its basic role, in the Safeguards Agreement, in particular its monitoring of Iran’s nuclear program, and the return of the safeguards file to its place in the Agency.
