Saud Abdulhamid Makes History: First Saudi to Score in European Competition

Saudi national team and Roma defender Saud Abdulhamid etched his name in football history by becoming the first Saudi player to score in a European competition. The historic moment occurred during Roma’s 3-0 victory over SC Braga in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday.

The Italian giants, leading 1-0 in the Europa League group stage, doubled their advantage through Abdulhamid’s goal in the 47th minute. The powerful strike cemented his place in history and delighted fans at Olimpico Stadium.

The 25-year-old right-back joined Roma in August 2024, leaving Al Hilal in a deal worth €2.5 million. Since joining, he has played five games, showing his adaptability in both Serie A and Europa League matches.

Last month, Abdulhamid made history as the first Saudi player to compete in one of Europe’s top-five leagues. He debuted in Serie A as a second-half substitute during a 1-0 loss to Napoli, marking a significant milestone.

Abdulhamid’s Journey and Skills

Born on July 18, 1999, in Jeddah, Saud Abdulhamid has become a symbol of Saudi football’s growth. Standing at 171 centimeters, he plays as a full-back with remarkable offensive skills. His speed and one-on-one ability often create chances for crosses, adding depth to Roma’s attacking play. However, Claudio Ranieri highlighted Abdulhamid’s need to refine his tactical understanding and defensive positioning.

Abdulhamid’s career includes six seasons with Al Ittihad and stints with Al Hilal and the Saudi national team. He played in the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup and faced Lionel Messi during Saudi Arabia’s memorable 2022 World Cup victory over Argentina.
