Russia invades Ukraine; explosions are on the rise in Kyiv

According to AFP correspondents, sirens blasted in the center of Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, on Thursday morning.

This came after Vladimir Putin ordered military action against Ukraine; strong explosions were heard Thursday morning in the capital, as well as in the cities of Odessa (southern) and Kharkiv near the Russian border and eastern Ukraine.

Russian shells were being fired towards military headquarters and airports near Kyiv, as well as the cities of Karkhiv and Dnipro, according to the Ukrainian Interior Ministry, shooting was also reported close to the border.

This comes as Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba stated on Thursday morning through Twitter that Russian raids had been begun on many towns, with explosions heard in Kyiv, Mariupol, Kramatorsk, Kharkiv, Odessa, and other areas.

Ukrainian border guards said in a statement on Thursday that Ukraine is being shelled by artillery along its northern border with Russia and Belarus, and that Ukrainian soldiers are retaliating with fire.

Russian forces, backed by Belarus, launched an offensive on Ukraine’s southern flank from Russian-occupied Crimea, according to border guards.

The Ukrainian Interior Ministry official announced that the Ukrainian government-controlled town of Shastya had fallen to Russian-backed separatists in the country’s east.
