Paris Paralympics Wrap-Up: China Claims Top Spot, Saudi Arabia Makes History

Saudi Arabia itched its name into history books at the Paris 2024 Paralympics by winning its second gold medal. The nation’s last Paralympic gold came from Osamah Al-Shanqiti’s triple jump victory at the 2008 Beijing Games.

Al-Qurashi’s Triumph

Abdulrahman Al-Qurashi was the hero, claiming gold in the 100 meters T53 event. This victory is a significant milestone for Saudi Arabia, ending a 16-year gold medal drought. Al-Qurashi‘s success came just two days after finishing fifth in the Men’s 400m T53 finals.

Paralympics

The 26-year-old is no stranger to the podium, having won bronze in the 100 meters T53 at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics. His achievements also include first place in the Men’s 100m T53 at the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Para Games in China, along with a bronze in the 400 meters T53 event. Al-Qurashi’s gold brings Saudi Arabia’s Paralympic medal count to six: two gold, two silver, and two bronze.

China’s Dominance

While Saudi Arabia celebrated its victory, China continued its dominance, topping the medal table with 220 medals, 96 more than second-placed Britain. China’s athletes showcased their depth and talent, finishing far ahead of other nations.

Arab Nations’ Performance

Arab countries faced challenges at the 2024 Paralympics, with modest success in securing medals. Athletes from Algeria, Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia, and Morocco reached finals and won some medals, but the overall performance was limited. The region’s medal tally highlights the need for greater investment in sports infrastructure and athlete development across Arab countries.

Saudi Arabia’s Future Prospects

Saudi Arabia’s success at the Paris 2024 Paralympics underscores the nation’s growing strength in para-sports. This achievement reflects the country’s commitment to supporting athletes with disabilities, setting the stage for future success on the global stage.

As the Paralympic flame extinguishes in Paris, the focus now shifts to the 2028 Games in Los Angeles. Nations like the USA, China, and other leading countries will build on their successes, while Arab countries aim to enhance their participation and medal prospects.
