Moscow Evacuates Nearly All Staff from Iran’s Bushehr Nuclear Plant

The head of Russia’s Atomic Energy Agency announced on Monday, Russia has evacuated nearly all its staff from Iran’s sole nuclear power plant, constructed and run with Moscow’s support, according to AFP.

Evacuating Staff

“We began the final rotation at the Bushehr station,” Alexei Likhachev said,

He also noted that 108 people have been evacuated while just 20 senior managers and specialists responsible for equipment safety remained at the station.

Moscow began evacuating its personnel from the power plant due to mounting security threats triggered by potential airstrikes amid the US-Israeli war on Iran.

War in Iran

On February 28, the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran, targeting its leadership and triggering a new conflict in the Middle East.

Iran has been responding with a retaliatory counterattack in Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi as a retaliatory move, while launching barrages of missiles and drones toward Israel.

The conflict has spread across the Middle East, leaving thousands dead, triggering unprecedented disruptions to energy supplies especially after the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

Security Threats

Moscow has repeatedly warned that any attacks near the vicinity of the plant could cause a “radiological disaster more devastating than Chernobyl.”

Despite all these warnings, the surrounding area around the facility has been hit at least four times since the onset of the war.

Iranian state media and the International Atomic Energy Agency’s analysis of satellite imagery of the site said that an attack earlier this month has killed a guard at the facility but did not cause any damage to the facility itself.
