KSA to Provide Electric Aircraft from Jeddah to Masjid Al-Haram

The Saudi Group intends to provide a high-quality service for transporting pilgrims and Umrah performers using electric aircraft from Jeddah to Masjid Al-Haram.
It will carry the passengers from King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah to the Masjid Al-Haram and the sacred sites.
Abdullah Al-Shahrani, the Corporate Communication Director of the Saudi Group, revealed to “Akhbar 24” that the company has contracted to purchase 100 sustainable German electric aircraft of the “Lilium” model.
These aircraft will fly from King Abdulaziz Airport in Jeddah to the aircraft landing sites in hotels in Mecca adjacent to the Holy Haram and the sacred sites.
Aircraft’s Capacity
Al-Shahrani added that these aircraft can carry four to six passengers. Moreover, it can cover a maximum distance of 200 kilometers. These aircrafts takeoff vertically with the assistance of small engines.
He also explained that Saudi Arabian Airlines is working in coordination with legislative authorities to obtain permits for flying this type of electric aircraft. Thanks to this sustainable and convenient aircraft, he expects a qualitative leap in the transportation process during the Hajj and Umrah seasons.
Future Plans
Al-Shahrani further noted in his statement to “Akhbar 24” that these aircraft will be used for the first time in the Kingdom. The company will evaluate the experience after receiving the contracted aircraft. It will consider increasing their number or changing the type of aircraft and using an upgraded version. He also mentioned plans to expand their use to cover all regions of the Kingdom.
Saudi Arabian Airlines has signed a memorandum of understanding with the German company Lilium , to purchase 100 planes. It is the developer of the first fully electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.
