American technology leaders Elon Musk and Jensen Huang solidified Saudi Arabia’s position as a burgeoning global AI hub during the US–Saudi Investment Forum in Washington DC on Wednesday. Consequently, both executives announced plans to build some of the world’s largest data centers in the Middle East, capitalizing on the Kingdom’s strategic vision for digital transformation.
This monumental strategic move aligns directly with Saudi Arabia’s multibillion-dollar bid to lead global AI innovation and accelerate national economic diversification efforts.
Musk, CEO of xAI, Tesla, and X, announced a colossal 500-megawatt artificial intelligence data center project destined for Saudi Arabia’s rapidly expanding tech sector. This powerful facility, which significantly expands xAI’s compute resources, will operate in collaboration with HUMAIN AI, the Kingdom’s sovereign wealth fund-backed venture.
Furthermore, this large new center will utilize world-class computing chips supplied by NVIDIA, guaranteeing superior and efficient processing capabilities for advanced models. Importantly, the announced 500 MW facility boasts considerably more power than xAI’s Colossus 1 data center in Memphis, one of the world’s current largest working computing clusters at approximately 300 MW.
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s continuing formal visit to the US provided the necessary strategic backdrop for these influential announcements, stating: “We are confident that our economic partnership will witness unprecedented growth in the coming years,” reflecting the powerful, strategic ties being formed between the two nations.
Strategic Technology Collaboration and Chip Access
Separately, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang announced plans for a 100-megawatt data center dedicated to Amazon Web Services, adding that he maintains a “gigawatt ambition and counting” for future regional expansion in the Kingdom.
However, the Trump administration is concurrently preparing to approve sales of advanced, high-end semiconductors to HUMAIN, which effectively clears a major pre-existing hurdle for this critical new data center development. These announcements follow the unveiling of a critical new AI Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the US and Saudi Arabia. This landmark MOU gives the Kingdom necessary access to world-leading American systems while simultaneously protecting vital US technology from foreign influence, according to the official White House statement.
The Future Vision of Computing
Sharing the stage with Huang and the Kingdom’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Abdullah Alswaha, Musk articulated a comprehensive futuristic vision of artificial intelligence. Musk enthusiastically declared that humanoid robots represent “the biggest product ever,” confidently asserting that these automatons will render future work entirely optional for global humanity.
Predicting the AI computing industry’s future, Musk furthermore stated, “Perhaps in the four or five-year time frame, the lowest-cost way to do AI compute will be with solar-powered AI satellites.”
Currently, xAI is heavily competing directly with industry leaders like OpenAI and Anthropic for advanced model development and essential investor funding with its flagship chatbot Grok. Musk strategically redirected substantial equity into xAI with a $15 billion investment, successfully establishing a $230 billion valuation for his innovative new artificial intelligence venture.
This powerful partnership reflects Saudi Arabia’s unwavering determination to position itself at the global forefront of technological innovation and secure its diversified, long-term economic future.
