Khaled Al-Mudaifer: Northern Region Contains 25% of Mining Wealth

Deputy Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources for Mining Affairs, Khalid Al-Mudaifer, stated that this area contains about 25% of the Kingdom’s mining resources.

These resources are valued at a staggering 1.2 trillion riyals.

Saudi Arabia’s Northern Border region holds a substantial part of the nation’s mining wealth.

Vision 2030

Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 initiative aims to diversify the economy and reduce reliance on oil. The mining sector is a key focus area, with potential mineral value in the Arabian Shield estimated at $1.3 trillion.

This initiative includes scaling up exploration and conducting comprehensive geographical surveys.

Strategic Pillars, Initiatives

The country’s mining and minerals strategy, which was launched between 2017 and 2018, is fundamentally constructed on three main pillars: firstly, a robust regulatory framework; secondly, the facilitation of ease of doing business; and thirdly, a strong commitment to environmental sustainability.

These pillars collectively form the foundation of the strategy, emphasizing a balanced approach to mining development.

Importantly, this comprehensive and well-thought-out strategy includes 39 targeted initiatives that specifically emphasize geological acquisition and ensure the provision of easy access to valuable geoscience data.

In terms of financial incentives, Saudi Arabia presents highly attractive offerings to mining companies. These incentives, notably encompass a competitive tax regime, low royalties, and a particularly generous five-year royalty holiday.

Consequently, this creates a more appealing environment for investment in this burgeoning sector.

Renewable Energy,

The nation is also focusing on renewable energy, aiming for 50% of its energy to come from renewable sources by 2030. This move aligns with mining activities, as the demand for minerals increases with the shift towards decarbonization.

Boosting Foreign Investment

Efforts are underway to increase foreign direct investment in the mining sector. Significant interest from international mining companies, including U.S. and Canadian firms, has been observed.

Overcoming Challenges

Saudi Arabia’s Northern Border region is not merely a vast reserve of untapped mineral wealth; it also serves as a crucial cornerstone in the country’s ambitious Vision 2030 plan.
