Israel to Seize Control of Massive Southern Lebanon Buffer Zone

The Israeli military intends to maintain control over a significant portion of southern Lebanon during its ongoing campaign against Hezbollah, as defence Minister Israel Katz announced on Tuesday that troops will establish a security zone reaching the Litani River. This area sits approximately 30km (19 miles) from the border. Consequently, displaced residents cannot return to their homes until the Israeli government deems the northern Galilee region safe from attacks.

Israeli forces recently destroyed five key bridges to disrupt Hezbollah’s logistics. Katz claimed that the militant group used these specific crossings for the passage of “terrorists and weapons” across the rugged Lebanese landscape. The current escalation followed a series of rocket attacks from Hezbollah into northern Israel. These strikes occurred despite a ceasefire agreement reached in November 2024.

The human cost of the conflict continues to rise sharply. According to the Lebanese health ministry, the violence has killed more than 1,000 people in Lebanon recently. This tragic figure includes at least 118 children and 40 health workers who died during the intense aerial and ground bombardment. Furthermore, more than a million people have fled their homes, creating a potential humanitarian crisis for the Mediterranean nation.

Defensive Strategies and Gaza Models

Israeli officials maintain that their primary objective remains the protection of civilian communities in northern Israel from persistent Hezbollah rocket fire. However, the IDF is now “manoeuvring into Lebanese territory to seize a front line of defence.” Katz explained that the military is “eliminating Hezbollah terrorists and destroying the terrorist infrastructures that were established there.”

He further noted that the army is targeting “the houses in the Lebanese border villages, which serve as terrorist outposts.” The Defence Minister compared this strategy to the military models used in Rafah and Beit Hanoun. Those major population centres in the Gaza Strip currently remain under Israeli military control after sustaining heavy damage.

The Future of Southern Lebanon

The Israeli government expressed frustration with the central authorities in Beirut, with Katz explicitly stating that the Lebanese government had done “nothing” to curb the influence of the Iranian-backed group. While Lebanon’s government previously vowed to disarm Hezbollah, the organization continues to refuse any discussions regarding the future of its vast arsenal.

The displaced thousands face a long road home. Katz stated that residents “will not return south of the Litani River until security is guaranteed for the residents of the north.” He summarized the new military doctrine with a stark warning. “The principle is clear: there is terror and missiles, no homes and no residents – and the IDF is inside.”

In response, Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun condemned the strategy, describing the Israeli plans as a “policy of collective punishment against civilians.” This rhetoric highlights the deep divide as the region braces for a prolonged military occupation.
