Saudi Electricity-owned Dawiyat Integrated has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Grid Telecom to build a subsea cable system connecting Greece to Saudi Arabia, reported the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
According to the MoU, Dawiyat and Grid Telecom, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO) of Greece will establish a new cable system linking Saudi Arabia to the Island of Crete. The system will extend westwards to major European destinations and eastwards to the entire Arabian Peninsula.
The partnership stands as a testament to Dawiyat’s strategy to enhance its investments in digital infrastructure and meet the growing demand for reliable communications services.
Furthermore, the company aims at satisfying the needs of local and international operators, cloud computing service providers, content creators and artificial intelligence applications.
“Our partnership with Grid Telecom in a consortium to build a new cable system will increase our network’s resiliency and reach. Leveraging on the strategic position of Crete, it will create a new cable system, interconnecting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with Greece and the Balkans, providing a new entry point to Europe,” the CEO of Dawiyat Integrated, Wael Ali Al-Ghamdi, said.
The deal will also provide transformative projects that create long-term value, such as developing hyperscale-ready data centers and providing gateways between continents.
“Our collaboration with Dawiyat Integrated in building a new cable system will support the implementation of a new corridor between Greece and Saudi Arabia. Moreover, it will enhance the strategic role of Crete as a regional open-access interconnection node in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Balkans,” the Chairman of Grid Telecom, Mr Kostas Agathakis, said.
