IMF’s Managing Director Urges Sustained Gaza Ceasefire for Regional Stability

The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva, called on all parties to build on the Gaza ceasefire and exert more efforts toward a lasting and sustainable peace, according to Reuters.

Georgieva added that she felt relieved when the mediators reached a ceasefire deal for Gaza War, noting that it offered hope to all those affected by the two-year conflict in the Palestinian enclave.

During the annual meetings of the IMF and World Bank in Washington, she said that easing regional tensions would have positive economic prospects for both Egypt and Jordan, which have IMF-supported programs.

Moreover, Lebanon and Syria would leverage as they have sought assistance and support from the international lender.

“It is important because everybody concerned encourages this direction of sustaining a lasting peace, and yes, it would benefit the region,” she said. “There will be a peace dividend for everybody.”

She clarified that the new Syrian government has asked help from the IMF to rebuild its central bank and other key institutions. In response, an IMF team has already visited Damascus to assess needs and provide guidance.

Meanwhile, Georgieva mentioned that the IMF is currently engaging with Lebanon, which has officially submitted a request for a loan program to address its economic challenges.

“I hope we will be able to come up with a program,” she added.

“So, when there is peace, there is also this benefit that those who are there to support you, it is easier, more viable for this support to come,” she said.
