The Saudi Football Federation confirmed Herve Renard’s unexpected return as head coach, replacing Roberto Mancini on Saturday. Renard, who led Saudi Arabia from 2019 to 2023, signed a two-year contract, according to a source involved in negotiations.
Renard’s return has stirred controversy, but his familiarity with the team was the key factor. “Let’s hope he stabilizes the team for World Cup qualifiers,” the source stated.
Renard Reflects on Saudi Connection
In a video posted by the Saudi Football Association, Renard expressed his strong ties with Saudi fans. “My story with Saudi Arabia is not over. I’m back,” he said.
Renard famously led Saudi Arabia to a shock victory over Argentina at the 2022 World Cup. However, he left in March to coach France’s women’s team, which he led to the Paris Olympics before stepping down in August.

Mancini Departs Amid Poor Results
Mancini, who replaced Renard, left Thursday following disappointing results. The final straw was a home defeat to Japan and a draw against Bahrain in World Cup qualifiers.
Building a competitive national team remains a priority for Saudi Arabia, which spent over a billion dollars on players last year. The country is also the sole bidder for the 2034 World Cup.
