Saudi National Team Part Ways with Coach Mancini

The Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) announced a mutual agreement with Italian coach Roberto Mancini to end his contract, effective immediately. The decision follows a string of poor results, capped by a disappointing World Cup qualifying draw with Bahrain. SAFF confirmed a new coach would be appointed soon to guide the team in crucial qualifiers and upcoming competitions.

A Short Stint with Mixed Results

Mancini took the helm at the Saudi national team in August 2023, succeeding French coach Hervé Renard, who had moved on to coach France’s women’s team. Mancini’s Saudi tenure began with high expectations, given his successful track record with Italy, Inter Milan, and Manchester City. However, in his 18 matches with the ”Green Falcons,” he managed seven wins, five draws, and six losses — an inconsistent run that ended in frustration.

Disappointing Asian Cup and World Cup Qualifiers

Under Mancini, Saudi Arabia faced several setbacks. His decision to exclude key players like Nawaf Al-Aqidi, Salman Al-Faraj, and Sultan Al-Ghannam raised questions as Saudi Arabia struggled in World Cup qualifiers. They managed only five points from four games, falling behind Japan and Australia in their group standings.

In the Asian Cup, Mancini’s squad exited in the Round of 16 after a tense penalty shootout against South Korea. The Italian coach drew criticism for leaving the field before the final penalty kick, a decision SAFF President Yasser Al-Meshal called “completely unacceptable.”

A Storied Career, But A Challenging Chapter

Mancini’s career boasts prestigious achievements, including leading Italy to victory in the 2021 European Championship and clinching titles with Inter Milan and Manchester City. Yet, his Saudi campaign never gained momentum. Media speculated about Renard potentially returning, especially after Mancini’s resignation from the Italian team, surprising fans worldwide.

As Saudi Arabia searches for a new leader, the nation hopes to rebound in both World Cup qualifiers and the next Asian Cup. The SAFF remain confident that the upcoming coach will restore the team’s competitive edge on the global stage.
