Global Academic Excellence: KFUPM Leads 22 Saudi Universities in Latest QS Rankings
Saudi Arabia has achieved a significant milestone in global higher education, as 22 Saudi universities have earned places among the world’s leading higher education institutions in the QS World University Rankings 2027, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported on Tuesday, underscoring the Kingdom’s expanding footprint in global academia.
King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) led all Saudi institutions, climbing to 63rd place worldwide and securing a coveted spot among the top 100 universities globally. King Saud University followed at 107th, with King Abdulaziz University placing 200th. Further down, Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University ranked 421st and Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University 474th.
A Broad and Diverse Presence
Beyond the top five, the rankings recognised a further 17 Saudi institutions, reflecting the breadth of the Kingdom’s academic development. These include Prince Sultan University, King Khalid University, King Faisal University, Umm Al-Qura University, Qassim University, and Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University.
Female-led institutions also featured prominently, with Effat University and Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University both earning global recognition alongside Alfaisal University, Taif University, Majmaah University, and the Islamic University of Madinah. Northern Borders University, University of Hail, University of Tabuk, and Taibah University rounded out the Saudi contingent.

The strong showing across 22 institutions signals genuine, sustained progress in education quality, scientific research output, and institutional innovation. Consequently, the results carry broader strategic significance. Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 places knowledge-based economic development at the center of the Kingdom’s long-term ambitions, and international rankings serve as one tangible measure of progress toward that goal.
In addition, the results reinforce Saudi Arabia’s reputation as a regional hub for higher education, one that increasingly draws comparisons with leading academic centers worldwide.
