EU Condemns Israel’s Gaza City Offensive, Warns of ‘Death, Destruction’

The European Union (EU) issued a stark warning on Tuesday regarding Israel’s ground assault on Gaza City, as the EU spokesman Anouar El Anouni stated that this military action will significantly increase the toll of death and destruction. Furthermore, it will exacerbate an already “catastrophic” humanitarian situation in the region.

“The EU has consistently urged Israel not to intensify its operation in Gaza City,” El Anouni emphasized, adding, “A military intervention will lead to more destruction, more death, and more displacement. This escalation will also endanger the lives of hostages.”

Before dawn on Tuesday, Israel launched its long-anticipated ground assault on Gaza City, as the Israeli military unleashed a massive bombardment as troops advanced into the territory’s largest urban hub. This operation marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict.

EU Proposes Measures Against Israel

Brussels plans to present proposals on Wednesday for a series of measures against Israel in response to the war in Gaza. EU chief Ursula von der Leyen indicated last week that these measures would include suspending trade aspects of a cooperation agreement and sanctioning “extremist” Israeli ministers.

However, achieving consensus on these measures will prove challenging. Deep divisions exist among the European Union’s 27 member countries regarding Israel’s actions in Gaza.

The current conflict erupted in October 2023 after Israel launched a campaign in Gaza which has claimed at least 64,905 lives, also predominantly civilians, based on figures from the territory’s health ministry, which the United Nations considers reliable.

UN Investigators Accuse Israel of Genocide

Moreover, UN investigators accused Israel on Tuesday of committing “genocide” in Gaza, alleging an intent to “destroy the Palestinians.” They specifically blamed Israel’s prime minister and other high-ranking officials for inciting violence.

In summary, the EU’s warnings highlight the urgent need for a resolution to the ongoing conflict, as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to worsen.
