The Secretary-General of the Muslim World League, President of the Association of Muslim Scholars, the Honorable Sheikh Dr. Muhammad Al-Issa, delivered a lecture titled: “Law and Religion: Horizons of Peace and Addressing Social Divisions,” at the invitation of Harvard Law School.
He spoke about the diversity of religious and legal interpretations, and what may sometimes appear as a conflict between religious texts and legal texts in countries with religious diversity, as well as the methods of dealing with this. He emphasized the most important foundations for maintaining social unity and discussed several religious and legal opinions.
In the dialogue that followed the lecture, led by the seasoned professor, Ms. Martha Mino—one of the prominent figures at the College of Law—Dr. Al-Issa elaborated on the roles of religion and law in promoting social unity and addressing methods of division. He reviewed the challenges and threats, along with proposed ideas to overcome them, as well as the necessary rules to achieve effective and fruitful dialogue.
Additionally, he discussed some historical and contemporary conflicts and the stance of religion towards them, along with a discussion on the legal responsibilities concerning these issues. He also presented the experience of the Muslim World League in the Makkah Document and the Document for Building Bridges between Islamic sects.
