Cholera Outbreak in Sudan’s Khartoum kills 70 in 2 Days

Health Ministry for Khartoum State said that cholera had killed 70 people in two days as the Sudanese capital was suffering a fast-spreading epidemic amid deteriorating living conditions, according to AFP.

The ministry announced it had recorded 942 new infections and 25 deaths on Wednesday, and 1,177 cases and 45 deaths on Tuesday.

This noticeable increase in the infections follows a number of Rapid Support Forces’ drone strikes that caused the disruption of water and electricity supply across the capital.

Last week, the army-backed government unveiled that it had removed RSF fighters from their last positions in Khartoum State two months after retaking the heart of the capital from the paramilitaries.

The outbreak of cholera represents a serious danger and growing pressure on an already collapsed health care system.

The federal health ministry revealed 172 deaths in the week to Tuesday, 90% of them in Khartoum State.

Authorities noted that 89% of patients in isolation centers are recovering. However, it warned that worsening health and environmental conditions lead to increase in the infections.

The war in Sudan has resulted in one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises with the death of tens of thousands of people and displacement of 13 million, according to the UN.
