China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi will chair a high-level UN Security Council meeting in New York on 26 May, the foreign ministry confirmed Friday. Specifically, the session focuses on “Upholding the purposes and principles of the UN Charter”. Consequently, Wang will meet UN Secretary-General António Guterres and foreign ministers from relevant countries during his visit.
Diplomatic Momentum Extends to Canada
Moreover, Wang will travel to Canada from 28-30 May at his counterpart’s invitation, following productive exchanges earlier this year, including a phone call between Wang and Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand in March.
Additionally, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s official visit to China in January signaled renewed bilateral engagement. Notably, China holds the UN Security Council’s rotating presidency for May 2026.
Therefore, Beijing prioritises multilateral cooperation and Charter-based dialogue during its tenure. Meanwhile, the UN pursues its “UN80” reform initiative amid budget constraints affecting global operations.
Wang’s leadership underscores China’s commitment to peaceful dispute resolution. Furthermore, the minister’s dual engagements highlight diplomatic bridges between major economies. Thus, stakeholders worldwide watch closely for outcomes advancing stability and cooperation.
