China Rejects Trump’s Tariff Threat Against Countries Doing Business with Iran
China announced late Monday its firm opposition to “illicit unilateral sanctions and long-arm jurisdiction,” following US President Donald Trump’s social media warning that countries engaging in trade with Iran would face 25% tariff on commerce with the US, according to Reuters.
“China’s position against the indiscriminate imposition of tariffs is consistent and clear. Tariff wars and trade wars have no winners, and coercion and pressure cannot solve problems,” a spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in Washington said on X.
The spokesperson added that Beijing vowed to “take all necessary measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests.”
China also opposed any foreign “interference” in the internal affairs of other nations, following Trump’s remarks that Washington might take military action If Iran suppressed protesters.
“We always oppose interference in other countries’ internal affairs,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told a regular news conference when asked about Trump’s comments.
Beijing urged all parties to take further actions to ensure peace and stability across the Middle East.
US Threats
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei accused the United States of fueling the unrest in Iran.
On Friday, Trump again declined to rule out new military action against Tehran, following Washington’s involvement in Israel’s 12‑day war with the Islamic Republic in June.
“Iran’s in big trouble. It looks to me that the people are taking over certain cities that nobody thought were really possible just a few weeks ago,” Trump said.
When asked about his message to Iran’s leadership, Trump warned: “You better not start shooting, because we’ll start shooting too.”
