Brazil Rejects ‘New Cold War’ Ahead of Landmark Meeting with Trump

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva unveiled on Sunday that his country has no interest in entering a “new Cold War,” calling on the Trump administration to treat all nations with fairness, according to Reuters.

“I want to tell U.S. President Donald Trump that we don’t want a new Cold War,” Lula declared at a press conference in New Delhi, wrapping up a three-day visit to India.

His remarks came just days before his scheduled meeting with Trump in Washington during the first week of March.

“We don’t want to interfere in any other country; we want all countries to be treated equally,” Lula added.

The agenda of the upcoming meeting will delve into trade, immigration, investment, and broadening academic partnerships between universities.

There are clear points of divergence between Lula and Trump such as the Republican president’s tariffs, Israel’s war in Gaza, Washington’s seizure of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro as well as Trump’s controversial “Board of Peace” initiative.

On Friday, the US Supreme Court struck down many of Trump’s tariffs on global imports.

Moreover, Trump declared the levies would be replaced with a new 15% duty under a different law.

Lula declined to comment on the decision.

However, he said he thinks that “relations between the US and Brazil will be in a better position.”
