Saudi Aramco has launched new initiatives to accelerate the development and implementation of advanced digital solutions throughout its operations. These initiatives were announced at the Global AI Summit (GAIN), which began at the King Abdulaziz International Conference Center in Riyadh.
Ahmad Al-Khowaiter, Aramco EVP of Technology & Innovation, said: “New digital technologies such as Generative AI and the Industrial Internet of Things are expected to transform not only how we work, but also our commercial environment. Aramco is pioneering the use of these technologies at an industrial scale to add significant value across our operations. Our history of innovation inspires us to continue harnessing emerging technologies and help realize the Kingdom’s ambitions to become a global AI leader.”
Key Partnerships to Advance AI, Supercomputing
Aramco signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with Cerebras Systems and FuriosaAI to explore potential collaborations in supercomputing and artificial intelligence.
Additionally, Aramco entered into an MoU with Rebellions to consider deploying the company’s Neural Processing Unit chips in its data centers, aiming to enhance digital infrastructure and foster advanced AI innovations.
Aramco also signed an MoU with SambaNova Systems to explore strategies for accelerating AI capabilities, fostering innovation, and promoting AI adoption throughout the Kingdom.
Aramco has also announced the launch of an AI supercomputer, one of the first of its kind in the region. Equipped with some of the most powerful NVIDIA Graphical Processing Units (GPUs), this system is designed to expedite complex computing tasks, such as analyzing drilling plans and geological data, to suggest low-carbon-intensity options for well placement.
Qualcomm Technologies
Aramco has also partnered with Qualcomm Technologies to deploy industrial generative AI solutions at the edge. These solutions are designed to improve facility monitoring, enable predictive maintenance. This also support the use of autonomous drones at Aramco’s facilities.
The new initiatives announced during GAIN are part of Aramco’s strategy to adopt advanced digital solutions, building on the launch of the Saudi Accelerated Innovation Lab (SAIL) and the Global AI Corridor ecosystem.
The approach has so far resulted in the creation of Aramco’s first large language model (LLM) serving industrial AI applications.
AI Program
It has also launched the Eye on AI Program to develop robust AI cybersecurity governance and systems, while equipping users with essential skills in a rapidly changing environment.
